The baby above was born in perfect health. Unfortunately, not all babies are so lucky.
Four Forms of Cerebral Palsy
Classified by Severity of Permanent Disability and the Body Parts Affected
Within the three types of Cerebral Palsy that are classified by the type of permanent disability caused by the permanent brain damage suffered during delivery, the permanent brain damage suffered at birth, or the permanent brain damage suffered shortly after birth, Spastic Cerebral Palsy, Athetoid Cerebral Palsy, and Ataxic Cerebral Palsy, there are four classifications of Cerebral Palsy based on the body parts that are permanently disabled and the severity of the permanent disability to the body parts affected.
The four classifications of Cerebral Palsy based on the body parts permanently disabled and the severity of the permanent disability caused as a result of the permanent brain damage suffered during delivery, the permanent brain damage suffered at birth, or the permanent brain damage suffered shortly after birth are Quadriplegia, Diplegia, Hemiplegia, and Triplegia.
Quadriplegia is a type of Cerebral Palsy that affects all four limbs equally - Cerebral Palsy that equally affects both arms and both legs.
Diplegia is a type of Cerebral Palsy that affects all four limbs unequally – Cerebral Palsy that affects both legs more severely than both arms.
Hemiplegia is a type of Cerebral Palsy that affects one side of the body – Cerebral Palsy that usually affects the arm more severely than the affected leg.
Triplegia is a type of Cerebral Palsy that affects three limbs – Cerebral Palsy that usually affects both arms and a leg.
