Pap Smear Still Essential to Prevent Cervical Cancer

While the vaccine to prevent cervical cancer is an exciting development in women's health care, it doesn't make Pap tests any less important. The cervical cancer vaccine doesn't protect against all types of HPV. Regular Pap tests are still a necessary tool to detect any abnormal cells that could lead to cancer.

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of Pap smear, no matter who has the HPV vaccine.

At best, the HPV vaccine protects against 70 percent of the strains of HPV that can lead to cervical cancer. Even if children are immunized, there is still a 30 percent chance that they could be infected with cancer causing stains of HPV.

On top of this, the vaccine is not approved for women 26 and older. The peak age of cervical cancer is 48.

It would be wonderful if speculums and Pap smears could be eliminated, but even if every female in the world were vaccinated, a significant portion would still be at risk of cervical cancer.
